Mazda i-ELOOP Capacitor Faults Explained (P1794:13 – Capacitor Circuit Malfunction)

Home genesis-auto-works-logo Mazda i-ELOOP Capacitor Faults Explained (P1794:13 – Capacitor Circuit Malfunction)

Understanding Mazda’s i-ELOOP System and Common Failures

Mazda’s i-ELOOP system is an advanced regenerative braking and energy-recovery setup designed to improve fuel efficiency. Instead of using a traditional hybrid battery, the i-ELOOP uses a large capacitor to store energy generated during deceleration. That stored energy powers the vehicle’s electrical systems — such as the headlights, air conditioning, and infotainment — reducing the alternator load and improving fuel economy.

However, as these systems age, certain i-ELOOP capacitor faults have become increasingly common in Mazda models such as the Mazda 3, Mazda 6, and CX-5. One of the most frequent diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) associated with i-ELOOP issues is P1794:13 – Capacitor Circuit Related Malfunction (Open Circuit).

What the P1794:13 Code Means

When a Mazda sets P1794:13, the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected an open circuit or electrical fault in the i-ELOOP capacitor system. This means the high-voltage capacitor is not charging, discharging, or communicating properly with the DC-DC converter.

Typical causes include:

  • Open or broken wiring between the capacitor, DC-DC converter, or alternator.
  • Failed i-ELOOP capacitor assembly (internal open circuit).
  • Faulty DC-DC converter module.
  • Poor ground or corroded connector terminals.
  • Water ingress or heat damage to the capacitor housing (located in the engine bay).

Symptoms of an i-ELOOP Capacitor Fault

When this fault occurs, drivers may notice:

  • Check Engine Light (CEL) and/or i-ELOOP warning message on the dash.
  • Reduced charging efficiency — alternator running constantly instead of free-spinning.
  • Increased fuel consumption.
  • Stop-start system disabled.
  • Electrical performance fluctuations (dim lights, unstable voltage readings).

If left unresolved, a failed i-ELOOP capacitor or DC-DC converter can cause voltage instability, which may eventually affect sensitive control modules.

Professional Diagnosis Process

At West End Service Centre, we diagnose Mazda i-ELOOP faults using manufacturer-level scan tools and live data interpretation. Our diagnostic process typically includes:

  1. Code Confirmation & Freeze-Frame Analysis
    • Verify fault P1794:13 and record freeze-frame conditions to identify when it occurred.
  2. Visual & Connector Inspection
    • Check the i-ELOOP capacitor unit (mounted near the front left guard or radiator area) for corrosion, moisture, or physical damage.
  3. Wiring Integrity Test
    • Measure continuity between the capacitor, DC-DC converter, and PCM. Any open circuit indicates internal or harness failure.
  4. Voltage & Charging Test
    • Check voltage behaviour during acceleration, deceleration, and key-off conditions.
  5. Component Bench Test / Replacement Confirmation
    • Substitute with a known-good capacitor or DC-DC converter (if available) to isolate the failed component.

Repair Options and Common Outcomes

In most cases, replacing the i-ELOOP capacitor assembly resolves the issue. However, Mazda often recommends testing and replacing the DC-DC converter at the same time, as both components operate together.

Typical repair options include:

  • Capacitor replacement – new genuine unit or quality OEM equivalent.
  • DC-DC converter replacement.
  • Harness repair or re-termination of corroded connectors.
  • System reset and voltage adaptation reset using Mazda IDS or OBD-compatible diagnostic equipment.

After repair, the system is reinitialised and monitored to confirm correct charge/discharge function.

Preventing i-ELOOP Failures

While these faults can’t always be prevented, proper maintenance helps prolong component life:

  • Keep the engine bay clean and dry – moisture accelerates corrosion on electrical connectors.
  • Replace the battery with correct specification – low-voltage or incorrect batteries can stress the capacitor system.
  • Have the charging system inspected during regular servicing.

Testimonials

We were recommended to see Aaron for some repairs to our transmission by our regular mechanic

Aaron was super helpful with both the diagnosis methods, explained exactly what was going.on and how they pin pointed the problem as well as assisting with the requirements for the warranty claim.

The repairs were completed. We picked up the car and everything went as smooth as silk from start to finish.

I highly recommend Aaron and his team for anything DSG transmission related.

Chez Watts

Had my front brakes and car serviced today. Great customer service at a great price. The team are very knowledgeable and went above and beyond. Highly recommend Aaron and the team. Excellent service, Extremely professional, quick diagnosis and excellent workmanship.

Canaan Brown

Aaron is the best at what he does and seems dedicated to delivering a quality service at a reasonable price. He knows his stuff, goes above and beyond to accomodate his customers, offers a range of services and is by far the most trustworthy mechanic I've used locally. Aaron is always professional, and I have recommended Aaron to friends who have all been happy they took their cars to Aaron.

Lisa B

I rarely give reviews and only when something is exceptional. I've now been to West End Service Centre East Brisbane four times, and they have always exceeded my expectations. All the work was explained and where possible demonstrated to me, and they solved problems far more cheaply and quickly than I'd expected. And, Nick is impressively friendly, seems entirely genuine, and he even adapted when I forgot to bring my car in when we'd agreed! I'm definitely going to keep taking my car there.

Arthur Poropat

Feels like a new car again!! Couldn’t recommend these guys enough! Aaron is a genuine guy and goes out of his way to help you out. I’ve always dreaded taking my car to get serviced at a mechanic as it always feels like you can’t really trust their advice and my experience today couldn’t be more opposite to that! I will definitely be using Aaron and his team from now on. Thanks again guys.

Lauren Minchinton

Aaron and the team have been amazing over the last 2 months fixing all the items on my car from spark plugs to my suspension repairs and engine mounts and even got my aircon working again and blowing cold air. Thanks team for all the work. Highly recommended for air conditioning repairs!

Nathen Higginbottom

Very friendly staff with great communication skills. The price was reasonable and the service time was quick! Would recommend to anyone in the area or outside best mechanic experience I've had in a very long time!
